The following is a brief updated history of the Menz Shed of Kaiapoi.
This history is written in two parts. The first part is an attempt to summarise the history from the start up till the present day.
The second part deals with the opening day for the shed and subsequent Shed activities.

27th April 2011. The first meeting of the Menz Shed was on 20th of April 2011 in the book room at the Kaiapoi Working Men's Club, this is a room behind the room where they sell the raffle tickets.
Donald Pettit of Canterbury Men’s Health Group (Can Men) initiated this in conjunction with the Waimak Social Services rep Sue Snell. It must be remembered that this was just after the Canterbury Earthquakes of 4th September and 22nd February 2011 which had a devastating effect on so many people. Can Men was instrumental in organising the first meeting held after the earthquakes. Michelle Stephenson and Sue Snell placed an advertisement in a local paper and 7 men turned up. Jack Powell, Maurice Weir and John Forster are still members of the Shed- the others have passed away. Michelle and Sue organised the meetings and prepared the minutes for the original and subsequent meetings. The subscription initially was $20 a year.

Paul Grenier was an early member of the group and the situation was that John Forster was a full-time teacher at the Kaiapoi High School and had keys to the school workshop. For about a year the members would work at Paul’s place on a Wednesday morning and at the school workshop on Saturday mornings where there was a bigger selection of tools.
Funding. The hunt for funding resulted in a grant being given to the Shed from the Caritas. The granting of the fund was unusual as it was given to the Menz Shed -presumably on the basis that the men would be better placed to assist their families and the community in the aftermath of the Earthquakes- thus helping to relieve the stress on women in the community. The initial grant was for $25,000, but as the Shed was not a registered charity at this time, the money was held by the Presbyterian Support Services who would pass on the funds as requested.

Menz Shed Facilities. The hunt for a building and a suitable location started. Initially the council offered 240 square metres of land on the corner of Smith Street and Ranfurly Street in Wylie Park. The council also requested it to be fenced and have trees planted on the inside of the land. Vehicle access to the site was not allowed and in the post Earthquake times there was a condition the ground be tested which would have cost about $18,000. This was because Wylie Park in former times had been a river basin on a bend in the Cam River where ships could manoeuvre -including passing on to the Kaiapoi Woollen Mill. Wylie Park which is bounded by a road called Sidey Quay. It was decided the area was too small.
At a meeting with Rick Smith of Patience and Nicholson (subsequently taken over and renamed Sutton Tools (NZ) Ltd.,) a request was made to use the section on Dale St- beside an entrance to the factory site. This section is still unused. The Shed were told this section was not available but an area of the factory land in the corner near the Kaiapoi Domain was pointed out to the Shed members as possibly being available. This was checked with the Australian owners and the go ahead was given.
12th of February 2014. The “Northern Outlook” newspaper. Headlined-“ Grant gives shed flying start.” Kaiapoi Men's Shed secretary Frank Overend said a grant from the Jetstar flying start program would enable the group to finish building it's first shed and a much-needed second shed. The group was announced as the recipient of the latest round in funding from the program- receiving $15,000 in travel and $15,000 in cash.
The boost in funds comes after a rough start for the men.
Last year, a shed donated by the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA), from Kaiapoi’s red zone was accidentally demolished after communications bungle.
The shed has remained at its red zone site while Menz Shed members worked through the consenting process to re-locate it to a permanent place in Dale Street. However Mr Overend said they went to measure the shed up one day and it had disappeared.
Assuming it had been stolen, they contacted police, but were then notified by CERA it had been mistakenly demolished.
CERA then found another shed for the group. It has been placed on a permanent foundation and Mr Overend is hoping this will be completed by March or April.
The Jetstar funds will help them get a second shed, which might be used for metalwork.
The group has 26 members, mainly retired tradesmen, who began meeting in one man's garage two years ago.
The main purpose of the Menz Shed organisation is to provide a place for men to socialise and work together, to boost their well-being, Mr Overend said.
“I know it seems sexist, but the woman have got their groups and there is a big hole for men.”
Mr Overend expects a big rise in the membership once the shed is completed.
“Once we get up and running, it's going to grow to dramatically because there are a lot of guys who are twiddling their thumbs, and there are some really clever guys- it’s just that they're not young bucks anymore.”
The group has completed a number of community projects, including a bench for Kaiapoi North School, coffins, planter boxes and bird houses.
The travel portion of grant was used send Menz Shed members to an International Conference in Newcastle, Australia and also to assist delegates from around NZ to come to the Menz Shed conference held in Kaiapoi at the Blue Skies centre.
14th May 2014 Nomination of Pat Power as Patron.
A letter was sent from the Menz Shed to Mr Pat Power stating that the Shed at their meeting had accepted the nomination of Pat Power as the Patron for the Menz Shed of Kaiapoi. Pat was a member of the business community with many contacts and as such he was able to introduce and facilitate transactions which were beneficial to the Shed in these early days. The Shed also invited him to the opening ceremony for the shed on the 15th July.
15th July 2014 Tuesday-Opening day
A good crowd of around 80 plus turned up for a memorable afternoon. Late in the morning CTV arrived and interviewed Grant Kerr, CEO of Jetstar NZ Ltd and Steve Price, league legend and panel judge for the Jetstar's Flying Start program along with Secretary Frank Overend, and Chairman John Forster. Speeches followed at 1 pm - Rick Smith General manager of Patience and Nicholson gave a speech. The Mayor David Ayers and Glenn Morgan of Patience and Nicholson NZ Ltd also spoke. The ceremonial "cutting of the ribbon" was carried out by our Patron - Pat Power with a skill-saw, which was different and loved by the crowd. The speeches were followed by a fabulous spread provided by the ladies from the Community Gardens and a tour of the Shed.
It should be noted that John Forster -who was at the inaugural annual meeting held at the Kaiapoi club on 12th of September 2013 - still remains as chairman for the Kaiapoi Menz Shed.

April 15th to 17th April 2015, saw the National Menz Shed of NZ hold their Annual Conference at Blue Skies Scout complex. The event was a resounding success with 10 members from the Menz Shed of Kaiapoi attending, several with their wives. It was quite a coup to have the conference in Kaiapoi which included conducted tours of the Patience and Nicholson factory and an interesting tour of Graeme Chisnall's engineering workshop out at Mandeville. The conference itself was held at Blue Skies with several companies having active stalls inside the facility. Total attendees numbered approx 100 delegates from "North Cape to the Bluff". There were two neat tours for partners - one a tour of Christchurch CBD and the other to the Northbrook museum. Our personal thanks must go to the Sponsors who contributed to a great three days: Fairdinkum Sheds, New World, Bunnings, Mitre 10, Placemakers, Carbatec, Cancer Society, 3M, Rothbury, Blackwoods Protection, Coca Cola, Progressive Financial Planning, and Amberley Community Trust and GoBus for the excellent transport.
The top pic is our "Shoe Box Entry" - a working vice made entirely from laminated exotic wood. The second pic shows delegates at the Kaiapoi Golf Club Saturday evening dinner. The last pic shows Kaiapoi delegates and partners at the same meal.

The two containers above have now been painted a nice cream colour to match the Shed - The 40 footer is our exotic timber storage area and paint shop and the 20 footer is our metal shop - both containers now have power on.
The containers have now been ground down and spruced up with fresh paint to match our workshop. We have just completed adding on a 6 by 2 metre extension to the workshop to house our extractor equipment(December 2016). The container is now operational with both containers now with lighting and storage fittings
