Members Health and Wellbeing
The atmosphere in the Shed has an “open shop” feel about it which members invariably share over a cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit. Some members come along just for the company and a chat. Some come along just
to sweep the floors and keep the shed tidy. Alcohol is not permitted which complies with Sutton Tools standards.

Safety and Security in the Workplace
There is a full First Aid cabinet and Injury Record Notebook in the Shed. It is important that all injuries are recorded in the note book- as this information can be important if it leads to an ACC application. It is also a means for the Shed to be aware of possible safety issues.
Signage is up in the Shed and there is a concerted emphasis to ensure the whole group is conversant with up-to-date work shop safety. Fire safety is a concern and smoke alarms and several fire extinguishers are in place in the Shed.
Security is a concern , and to this end measures have been put in place to minimise any risk. NO MONEY is held on our premises.

The Shed:- The Shed provides a community space where men can meet, socialise and work cooperatively. Some Members do work on their own tasks, but they may also help to run the Shed. We also aim to support the local community.
Toilets:- Located in the Kaiapoi Domain with access through a gate in the boundary fence. Have someone show you the gate and lock code.
Sign In Book:- Sign in on arrival, and tick beside your name on departure. This is necessary in case of evacuation roll call and for possible Covid-19 tracing.
Name Tags:- A name tag will be issued and must be worn at all times because this is a Suttons work site. Please take the name tag home with you and REMEMBER to wear the name tag each time you visit the Menz Shed site. This enables Sutton’s staff to identify you as a Menz Shed member.
A Heart Foundation card is to be filled in with health summary and contact details and placed inside the name tag with your ID.
Footwear:- Jandals, sandals and open footwear is not appropriate in the workshops. Members must wear safety shoes with steel toe-caps. Reasonable price safety shoes can be purchased at The Warehouse.
Safety:- We are all responsible for our personal safety. In addition, if you see someone acting in an unsafe manner - consider suggesting to them what they could do. Example – unsafe use of equipment or use safety glasses or earmuffs which are freely available. You may also mention the matter to one of the Safety Team.
First Aid:- The name(s) of the trained first aid person is/are on the board.
There are first aid kits located in the Metal workshop, Paint Shop and Piano Room. All injuries are to be recorded in the Piano Room notebook. If for instance a cut becomes infected, then that person may be able to claim on ACC.
For severe injury contact St John- 111. Explain the nature of the emergency- note the address is No 14 Sim St, on Sutton’s site in the Menz Shed.
Defibrillator:- Located in the Sutton’s Factory (not Engineering).
Fire Prevention:- Wood shavings and wood dust burn readily. In the woodworking areas, when using equipment that can generate sparks such as metal cutting equipment or grinders make sure that no sparks cause a fire. Be aware that sparks can sit and smoulder long after the premises have been closed up for the day.
Smoke Detectors:- There are smoke detectors located within the buildings.
Fire Extinguishers:- Your guide for the induction will show you the location of the fire extinguishers and the water hose. If necessary phone the fire brigade - 111.
Evacuation:- Should it be necessary to evacuate the Menz Shed buildings, people are to gather on the paved area, south side of the fuel tank, out of the way of possible emergency vehicles. The roll will be called using the sign in book.
Noise Control:- Suttons have their office alongside the Menz Shed workshop. Noise from the machinery cannot be avoided but please limit any noisy activities immediately outside their workspace.
Equipment Use:- Machines can be very dangerous if used improperly. There is the risk of losing fingers or eye injuries. Do not use equipment if you have not been checked out by one of the members. Ask someone before you use any machinery that you are not familiar with. All major equipment has operating instructions taped on the machine or the adjacent wall.
Metal Workshop Container:- The metal workshop is a NO GO area for all except the people who work in this space. No equipment is to be borrowed from the metal workshop without express permission from the people who work in this workshop. No sharpening of equipment is to be carried out by members not authorized to be in there. This restriction is because the narrow space in this workshop makes it unsafe to have more people than those authorised to work in this workshop.
Dust Collection System:- The first step before starting equipment should always be to check that any relevant dust collector system has been turned on. This may involve turning on a dedicated dust collector or opening the slide valve on the ducting to the main dust collector. It is important to shut off the slide valves when you have stopped using the machinery.
Waste Timber:- Waste timber can be dropped into the bins where it can be taken by members for firewood. Do not put treated timber into these bins.
General Waste:- This is disposed of in the Black and Red topped bins near the Sims Rd. entrance. Speak to a shed member before using the bins for the first time.
Smoking:- We have wood dust, shavings from equipment as well as solvents being used. At no time is smoking permitted in the building or in adjacent areas.
Alcohol:- Suttons has a strictly “NO ALCOHOL” policy on the factory premises and this is endorsed by the Menz Shed in all our workshops, assembly spaces, outside yards and office because of the risks with power tools.
Job Cards:- When members of the community come with project requests please ensure a job card is prepared. This must have contact details, what has been agreed and any relevant information to complete the work and be appropriately invoiced. Any drawings or sketches are also to be retained with the job file. This information can be required if a repeat of the job is required or if the project coordinator is away.
Metal Detector Wands:- It is important to remove all metals from timber before it is put through equipment as damage to the planer cutting head can be expensive requiring sharpening or replacing of all three blades. Ensure the Wand is passed over recovered timber before the timber is used or placed in a storage rack.
Thicknesser Start:- Only use the thicknesser with supervision and instruction from a person familiar with use of this machine. Check all timber using the metal detector wand.
Before processing a piece of timber measure it's thickness at BOTH ends, adjust the machine to the thicker end for the first run and for subsequent passes reduce the thickness by a maximum of 2 mm.
For operation use the three position switch “Off”, “Start” and “Run”. After “Start” position wait for the motor to build up speed then move the switch to the “Run” position. Incorrect starting of the machine may burn out the motor and damage the drive belts.
New Thicknesser:- This is only to be used by a trained member. The dust extraction system has to be turned on.
Welding Restriction:- One result of the power supply connection after Sutton’s fire is the inability to weld at the same time as some equipment is running in the Shed. Basically, the two large saws cannot be operated while welding is being carried out. Normally the person doing the welding will request that operation of these two saws be halted until the welding is completed.
Outdoor Magnetic Broom:- This is used for picking up magnetic particles, nails which may have been dropped on the gravel.
Taking Equipment off Site:- Equipment and/or materials can only be loaned or taken off site with the written approval of the Chairman, Secretary, Doug or Jeff.
Tsunami Warning:- The location for the Menz Shed is in the yellow zone according to the latest Waimakariri Council guidelines. This zone could be flooded or isolated in a very large Tsunami. You do not need to leave this zone if you feel a long or strong earthquake.
Project Rules:- The shed is not for individuals to make items for sale on the open market. When this happens they are using the tools and resources provided and maintained by the shed without any form of liability for or payment towards the cost of maintenance of the tools and workshop. A copy of a memo - “Discussions and Considerations about shed activities” is attached.
It is OK To Say No:- The chairman, secretary and project leaders are tasked with ensuring the supply of projects for the Shed. So get in there, enjoy your time at the shed, use your talents, and if you feel at all inclined - just challenge yourself a little bit. However some members may feel unhappy or pressured to get involved in projects so remember IT IS OK TO SAY NO if you are uncomfortable!

Considerations:
In the first instance the shed was established to service various needs in the Kaiapoi community and needs of it’s members.
The charges that we make for these services are for materials and a labour charge to provide income to maintain the workshop and keep the tools serviced.
The general understanding is that the service that members provide in the workshop confers access to the tools for personal projects.
There is an implicit understanding that a member covers the cost of materials for personal projects or provides a “donation” for any materials provided by the shed which may or may not have been donated to the shed.
Members may ask another member with specialised skills to undertake a piece of personal work and the arrangement may be “gratis” or for a donation to “the shed”, but this needs to be clear from the outset.
Projects:
1) If a project is offered explicitly to the shed then it is a “shed project”.
2) If a project is offered to an individual they may choose to do it themselves or with the permission of the person commissioning the work they may pass the project to the shed to become a “shed project”.
3) If the shed is offered a project and it is not taken up by members and nobody is willing or able to take up the project then “the shed” may offer or choose to let it go to an individual as a personal contract at which point the individual is responsible for materials and costs and may retain any and all profits from the project.
4) The shed is not for individuals to make items for sale on the open market. When this happens they are using the tools and resources provided and maintained by the shed without any form of liability for or payment towards the cost of maintenance of the tools and workshop.
